Easter Seals Summer Camps
Offering Life-Changing Experiences to Children and Adults with Disabilities
The goal at camp is to explore abilities and build confidence in campers aged 6-49
For most of us, summer brings back fond memories of days at camp, making new friends and exploring new activities, gaining independence and confidence in ourselves. For parents of kids with disabilities it can be difficult to find a camp that will accommodate their child’s needs and once they do, to feel safe sending their child.
For 65 years Easter Seals has run summer camps for children and adults with all disabilities. A traditional overnight, outdoor camp completely transformed to accommodate all abilities. Quiet areas for sensory breaks, specialized equipment for climbing walls and big swing, specially trained staff with a higher than average 3:1 camper to staff ratio and 24 hour on-site nurses.
“At camp, they don’t hear the word no, which is what they hear a lot of when navigating the world around them. Here they can try any activity because it’s set up to be fully accessible and the staff are trained to work with all abilities and needs. And if a camper is nervous to try something, there is such a supportive environment to make them feel safe.” Says Barb, mother of camper Dillon.
A registered Canadian charity, Easter Seals is able to reduce costs to families through donations. To find out more about Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan, as well as other programs they offer visit: www.eastersealsbcy.ca
