June Holidays and Observances for Kids & Families

National Pollinator Month
June 1–30

Three cheers for honeybees, butterflies, and other pollinators that help our flowers bloom and our food grow. Celebrate by planting pollinator-friendly flowers, visiting a garden, or spotting bees and butterflies on your next walk.

Great Outdoors Month
June 1–30

June is the perfect time to get outside as a family. Visit a park, hike a trail, plan a backyard campout, or let the kids help choose one new outdoor adventure to try this month.

National Cheese Day
June 4

What's the one thing everyone can agree on? Cheese! Serve the kids grilled cheese tonight. Better yet, teach them to make their own. This sandwich isn't just for kids, either.

National Trails Day
June 6

Kick off summer with a walk, hike, bike ride, or stroller-friendly adventure on a trail. Keep it easy. Just pack snacks, bring water, and let the kids be in charge of the pace. You might not make it far, but the things they notice along the way will stick with them much longer.

World Ocean Day
June 8

You don’t have to live near the ocean to celebrate. Visit a lake, creek, aquarium, beach, or nature center, or do a simple ocean-themed craft at home. It’s a great day to talk with kids about how connected our waterways are, and how even small actions can help protect our planet.

National Best Friends Day
June 8

Celebrate the friends who make life sweeter. Invite another family to the park, help your kids make friendship bracelets, or let them send a quick note or drawing to someone they love spending time with.

Flag Day
June 14

Everyone knows the story of Betsy Ross, but have you heard of Bob Heft? In 1958, the Ohio teenager redesigned the American flag for a school project after Alaska and Hawaii became states. President Dwight D. Eisenhower later chose Heft’s design as the official 50-star flag still used today.

Even better? His teacher originally gave him a B-. It was later changed to an A.

International Picnic Day
June 18

Everyone loves a picnic! You can head to your favorite park for an elaborate grill out or simply throw a blanket down in your backyard and serve PB&Js. The joy of a picnic is in spending time together enjoying the outdoors. That amazing potato salad? Well, that's just a bonus.

National Go Fishing Day
June 18

The perfect excuse to head to the nearest fishing hole and see what you can catch. Even if the fish aren't biting, QT with kids will definitely be in season.

Juneteenth
June 19

Juneteenth marks the date enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were told in 1865 that they were free, two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, Juneteenth emphasizes African American education and achievement and is a time marked with everything from family reunions to rodeos. It is now recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.

National Flip Flop Day
June 19

Break out the flip flops, grab ice cream, and officially lean into summer mode. Bonus points if the kids wear the loudest pair they can find.

Summer Solstice
June 21

Summer is officially here! Get outside and celebrate the longest day of the year with bubbles, sidewalk chalk, a walk after dinner, or ice cream before bedtime. We call that a summer win.

Snap a family selfie to remember the start of summer. Backyard, beach, ball field, popsicles on the porch. Real-life photos are usually the ones kids love looking back on most.

National Upcycling Day
June 24

Did the kids outgrow their jeans? Cut 'em off and upcycle them into shorts. Or take those Amazon boxes — we know you've got an ample supply — and turn them into a castle, car, rocket ship, or puppet theater. Get creative with what's around you and have fun!
